5 Educational Places to Take Your Kids in Jacksonville

By: Rachel Smith

As homeschoolers, so much of our learning actually happens outside the classroom. We love taking advantage of all the amazing opportunities in our local community to make learning hands-on and memorable. Whether it’s science, history, or environmental studies, there are so many fun and educational places to visit in and around Jacksonville.

Here are some of our favorites:

1. Anastasia Mosquito Control District’s Disease Vector Education Center (St. Augustine)

Yes, a whole center dedicated to mosquitoes, and it’s actually really cool. At the Disease Vector Education Center (or the “mosquito museum,” as my kids like to refer to it), kids can look at mosquitoes under a microscope, explore how these tiny creatures spread disease, and learn what scientists do to track and control them. The exhibits are interactive, hands-on, and colorful. It’s surprisingly fun and a great way to spark curiosity about biology and public health. There is an outdoor mosquito-themed playground to wrap up your outing and let some energy out!

2. GTM Research Reserve

The GTM Research Reserve (aka the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve) is a beautiful place to explore Florida’s unique coastal habitats and learn about estuaries. Their Environmental Education Center has aquariums, touch tanks, and exhibits about estuaries, local wildlife, and conservation. They also host guided hikes and family-friendly programs. We spotted lots of wildlife as we walked on the nature trail, including a turtle and a couple of baby alligators!

3. Fort Matanzas National Monument (and Ferry Ride!)

This historic site near St. Augustine includes a free ferry ride (the only way to get to the fort) across the Matanzas River to a centuries-old Spanish fort. Park rangers lead tours and share stories about colonial Florida and the military history of the area. You can explore the inside of the fort and climb all the way up to the top for amazing views. There are stunning nature trails to enjoy, as well as a beach right across the road!

4. National Weather Service Jacksonville Office

If you’ve got a weather-curious kid (or adult!), you’ll enjoy a tour of Jacksonville’s NWS office (available by appointment). You’ll learn how meteorologists forecast weather, issue warnings, and use radar and satellite technology. The highlight of our trip was launching a giant weather balloon!

5. JEA Main Street Lab

Located in downtown Jacksonville, the JEA Main Street Lab is where much of the city’s water testing happens. While you may have never considered visiting a wastewater plant for fun, this tour offers a fascinating look into how our drinking water is monitored and kept safe. In this real working science lab we got to see chemists and microbiologists in action! It’s a great way to connect classroom science to real-world problem solving, especially when it comes to environmental health and water conservation.
